Here Comes the Bouquet

Whenever he designs a floral bouquet, Arthur Golabek wants you to really see every flower — down to each petal, leaf, and stem. His unique eye for designing with flowers is why the Sag Harbor resident is regarded as one of the most coveted wedding pros on the South Fork.
“I love showing the couple the final product and seeing them smile,” Golabek said. “…It’s so emotional. That’s the most rewarding part.”
Old Journals Offer Treasure Of Information About Hampton Bays School District

When Hampton Bays Board of Education members sat down to create the budget for the 1918-19 school year, the conversation sounded a little different from today’s exchanges. Rather than fret about teacher contracts or debate the pros and cons of piercing a state-mandated cap on the tax levy, the five elected board representatives had more immediate issues to address—such as whether they should set aside funds to finance the installation of the district’s first indoor toilet.
Board members opted to install the toilet, according to the nearly century-old handwritten minutes found inside one of four record-keeping notebooks that recently fell into the hands of the Southampton Town Historian Zach Studenroth. The minutes, written in cursive and black ink, show that the board allocated $1,050 of that year’s $10,548.55 operating budget to cover the installation.
Korean War Veteran From Southampton Takes Honor Flight

Not every war hero fought on the front lines.Inside the U.S. Naval Hospital, in the maternity unit, in St. Albans, New York, in the mid-1950s, Fran Westerhoff could be found running around and working long hours, assisting expectant mothers.
In nearly every case, the fathers of the babies were overseas fighting in the Korean War.
Ms. Westerhoff, now 82, spoke about that time in her life on Friday as she sat at the kitchen table in her Southampton home. She had recently returned from Washington, D.C., having been invited to join Honor Flight Long Island for a single-day trip to the nation’s capital out of Long Island MacArthur Airport in Ronkonkoma last month. The program was created to honor veterans for their service to the country.
